BECKETT IN REPERTOIRE

BECKETT REPERTOIRE

Beckett in Repertoire is the junction of four short plays: Act without words I and II, Come and Go, and That time, as a result of the research of the Companhia Nova de Teatro on the universe of Samuel Beckett.

Synopses

Act Without Words I – Written in 1956, has the solitude as plot. A man is thrown in the desert against his will. He stands up and start to reflect. A conflicting force which takes him out of that place, then he is thrown away for several times. Objects (string, scissors, cubes, jar of water) come up and disappear mysteriously.

Act Without Words II – According to Beckett, it was written around the same time as Act Without Words I (1956), and it was translated to French by the playwright and first published in the New Departures, vol.1, in 1959. The play features two men, A and B, inside bags on an uncomfortable platform and lit. To be awakened by ferrets, the characters perform a series of actions. The man is very slow and the B is very choppy.

That Time – Written in English in 1974/75, this piece portrays only the face of an old, decrepit man with labored breathing. Three voices emerge from the darkness, recalling distinct moments from his life, intertwining and alternating.

Come and Go – Written in 1965 questions the human relationship with three women and three secrets. The characters remain trapped in his memoirs, where there is no time or space given and where it can evoke passively their pasts, confining and trusting the irony of their lives. This is a play in which the word, silence and action take turns in perfect balance and harmony.
